History

In 2016, the inaugural Asian Youth Championship took place in Hanoi, Vietnam with 160 young players from all over Asia in action.  This was a brilliant first edition and progressed to an even bigger event in 2017 when seven clubs and 13 teams competed in competitions across four age categories from U6 to U14 at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort In Kuala Lumpar. All players were a credit to themselves, their coaches and parents. The games were played in a very competitive and sportsmanlike manner. Their skills and passion were a joy to behold.

Congratulations to all this years winners and lets make sure we contribute anything possible to help these kids continue their GAA career and one day represent their club at senior level. Great credit is due to the Asian County Board for all the time they have invested in setting up this event.

From the early days at Turf City with only our own kids, a few pals & a family of Macaques turning up for the early Sunday morning sessions, we established a regular underage session at Turf City in partnership with Tim Lambert of Centaurs, our rugby neighbours who sublet their shed to us for the storage of our gear. Within a year we had GAA goalposts from Ireland & brilliantly coloured GAAGO & First Touch footballs. A bag of hurls and new kit soon followed from Pat Daly & Aine Gibney in Croke Park. Every Sunday was so much fun & made lots of great memories - from the 14 year old who arrived for training with his hurl & promptly called himself a taxi when we said we would be starting with Gaelic Football training, to the local family who observed our training for two weeks before their lad ever kicked a ball with us, to the parents who gathered for a coffee under the tent & the kids who came training mainly to play with the dogs. The baton was then passed to Clare Keane, Peter Tierney and the rest of the Gaelic Lions Football Club when we left Singapore in 2009 so let me sincerely thank all the people and families in those early days who made it happen

Peter and Teresa Ryan started something very special and thanks to the determination of so many people like Peter Tierney, Clare Keane and all the brilliant families like the Gills, O’Sullivans, MacDonalds, Powers, McGraths, McGoldricks, Greenwoods, O’Maoileoins, Fitzsimons, Connollys - to name just a few, that legacy was preserved and expanded.

Peter T handed the baton in 2013 to Pat Ryan and Colm Davis and then it was taken over by Valerie O’Brien and Lee Fitzgerald. All of these have taken the cubs club to even greater heights and it has no signs of stopping anytime soon. More and more parents are constantly getting involved helping out and the numbers do not stop increasing. The small Sunday morning sessions that were once there 10 years ago are long gone and have been replaced with a full pitch of cubs chasing their dreams as parents do everything in their power to help.

This is what a club is all about and this is where it all starts, it is not about financial reward or constant praise for parents and coaches, it is about knowing that they have given everything possible to nurture the new talent of Singapore and no doubt in years to come we will all see the benefits reaped on the GAA fields of Singapore and across the world.

It is not about winning or losing for kids - it is much more about taking part in our national games, developing their basic motor skills and making friends.

2018 AYC Recap....

Nine clubs, 18 teams and over 100 participants competed in Gaelic Football competitions across six age categories from U6 to U16 at the recent GAA Asian Youth Championship. All players were a credit to themselves, coaches parents and their Clubs. The games were played in a fiercely competitive and sporting fashion and their skills and expertise were a joy to behold.

U6 - Orang Eire and Singapore Cubs played two exhibition games and of course all both matches ended in draws. Ethan Huntley picked with the MVP award, one to watch for the future.

U8 - Singapore Cubs/Viet Celts, Orang Eire A & B and Garden International School Scouts played 6 group games, and in an extremely competitive final, Singapore Cubs overcame a spirited Orang Eire side. Special mention to Adam McSwiney from Singapore Cubs who thoroughly deserved his MVP award.

U10 - Seoul Gaels/Korean International School, Beijing GAA, Singapore Cubs, Malaysian Warriors AusKick and Orang Eire played 11 group games, and in an extremely competitive final, again, the Singapore Cubs overcame a spirited Orang Eire. Congratulations to Lorcan Cahill from Beijing GAA on his well-deserved MVP award.

U12 - Joe McDonagh Cup - This was the most competitive competition, 4 teams, Shanghai, Seoul Gaels, Malaysian Warriors Auskick and Singapore Cubs played 6 group matches and in an exhilarating final Malaysian Warriors Auskick were victorious over Singapore Cubs after extra time. Well done to Jihan, from Seoul who was a worthy winner of the MVP award.

U14 - Shanghai claimed the trophy and Johnny Yin picked up the MVP award. Many thanks to Shanghai for stepping up and competing in the U16 competition.

U16 - Joe Maleady Cup - Singapore Cubs, Shanghi and Orang Eire/Viet Clets competed in a round robin format with Orang Eire emerging as worthy winners. However the highlight of this competition was the All-Star Game which I believe finished in a draw. Callum Cleary, from Orang Eire was a popular winner of the MVP award (a fix if ever I saw one). The end of an era for many in this age category and we wish them well as they progress into the Senior ranks for their respective clubs.

Puc Fada – A good year for the Green Machine. Congrats to Daniel Kloos, the winner of the inaugural Puc Fada competition.

Scor - Many thanks to Niamh Bannon and Adam English as the pioneering participants in possibly the first ever Scor competition in Asia.
