Some of our SGL members (the lovely Niamh Brady, Pa O'Keeffe and Conor Walsh) are involved in Brian Friel’s play Translations, which will run between June 19th to 22nd at the Drama Centre Black Box  in the National Library.

Description

The action takes place in late August 1833 at a hedge-school in the townland of Baile Beag, an Irish-speaking community in Ireland. In a nearby field camp a recently arrived detachment of the Royal Engineers is making the first Ordnance Survey. For the purposes of cartography, the local Gaelic place names have to be recorded and rendered into English. In examining the effects of this operation on the lives of a small group, Brian Friel skilfully reveals the far-reaching personal and cultural effects of an action which is at first sight purely administrative.

The play is about language: should it be prized for nostalgia and patriotism, or should we move along with what is necessary today, what is popular and understood by the masses? Both Irish and English characters "speak" their respective languages, but the audience hears these only as English. An English soldier and a local girl manage to express their feelings for each other despite the fact that neither speaks the other’s language. But theirs is a love that may have fatal consequences.
